Well, I finally got some new pets. We started with a pair of matching Zebra finches, Shiva (male) and Kali (female). The sound they make is so cute, a soft peeping, meeping sound. They had a nice red cage with several perches, a nest, and some other bird stuff.

Male common Zebra’s have orange patches on their cheeks, brown w white spots on their sides, and black across his chest. Females are gray on the top with tan tummies. They both have black and white stripe by their eyes.

Every morning, when the sun comes up, they start peeping and hopping around the cage. Drizzit really loves them. She wants to play with them and will lay all day on the table watching them. She really wants to Play With THEM! :) She barely bothers with the fish anymore. She knows she can’t get to them unless she wants to get wet, which is the farthest thing from her happie day list.

Today we picked up a heat lamp for them, because I was told they need a bath at least once a week. But.....since my apt is so drafty, they may freeze before they would warm up and dry off. Now, I have found out from online forums that these types of finches are the hardiest out there and can survive the chilly inside of my apt at winter.

Now they have been busy little birds and have eggs. The first batch disappeared after we did the mistake of cleaning the cage with them in the nest. This time, I only entered the cage enough to clean out the old hay, change the food/water dishes, and hang new millet sprays.

And low, they had a peeping little baby birdie. But, because of a stupid mistake on my behalf (the nesting material the store sold me) the baby has to be kept. It’s little leg got tangled in the material and when I finally realized something was wrong, it was too late. We saved him, but he lost his little toes and is ground bound.

But he, or rather, she can fly great, just can’t hang on to those perches yet. I have bought a new larger cage, flight type so they can fly around. Also, as of now, Shiva has been relocated. He was plucking all the feathers from Kali’s neck and Cheeper’s back. I took him to the best store in town and picked up a new female zebra, Isis. They are already acting like they have always been together.

Well, as of Now....I still have Isis & Kali, who are living happly as possible in their cage, mounted to the wall in the kitchen of the new apt. People are asking my WHY i put their cage where I did....well, they are messy peeps. The new apt has carpet and I didn't want to vac everyday, so the kitchen looked the easiest to keep clean.<br>

My last Picture of Cheeper

As of April 4th, 2005, little Cheeper, daughter of Kali & Shiva passed away into the Open Heavens above. Her exact cause of death is unknown, but it was sudden. My poor sweet little baby was less than 6 months old and never did get the hang of holding onto a perch.

Isis & Kali in their new cage

This is Kali (smaller bird) and Isis (larger dark one). They live together well, Isis is supper laid back and calm, rarely even peeps. They love their new set-up, they watch me when I'm cooking, and get acess to sunlight during the day. If the amount of peeping (Kali likes to try to sing) is any way as proof of their happiness, mine are beyond HAPPY!

We are sleeping here!

Zebra Finches - The Basics

As all things will, poor Miss Kail passed away last year. One day she was fine, next day all fluffed and sickly. By the time I got the meds for her, it was too late. Since Zebra's are community birds, I didn't want to leave Miss Isis alone for any length of time - I cleaned the cage, replaced stuff and purchased a new gurl - Hathor.
